VoIP/ATA Dial-Up at Home - October 2025
I've been working over the last few weeks to get a substitute for a landline installed at home. Our ISP offers basic VoIP service, but at $40USD per month for unlimited long-distance calling, it's not worth it for what amounts to fooling around.
I already have a FreePBX setup and a few IP phones, so I'm working towards integrating an ATA with that existing setup. I've got a semi-local phone number through VoIP.ms (not sponsored!) and I'm hoping that'll be the answer to all of my telephony desires.
HP 660LX Palmtop/Handheld PC - October 2025
I recently picked up this HP 660LX for more than I should have paid for it. I've wanted one of these little handheld PCs for a long time - I had a Toshiba Libretto 50CT for a time but sold it - so I've finally got one. It included all of its original accessories, and the battery even holds for a useable amount of time!
HP Kayak XW 6/400 Dual Pentium II Workstation
I finished up building my dream dual Slot-1 workstation in August, after a series of failed starts. Here's the specs:
- Motherboard: Custom Hewlett-Packard board, based on the Intel BX chipset
- CPU: 2x Intel Pentium II 400MHz, 512KB Cache
- RAM: 512MB ECC SDRAM
- GPU: ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 256MB driving dual Dell 1905FP 1280x1024 LCD displays
- Sound: Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2ZS
- Storage: 512GB Samsung 860EVO SATA SSD via Promise SATA PCI controller
- Networking: 3Com 1000BASE-T Gigabit PCI Ethernet controller
- Operating System: Windows 2000 Professional, Service Pack 4 with LegacyUpdate patches
Right now, it mostly runs Discord Messenger, a really neat 3rd-party (and wholly unauthorized!) Discord client for vintage PCs.
I also use it to make abstract 3D artwork in Bryce 4.0, stream internet radio stations in Winamp, and synchronize with the little 660LX.
